A former Commissioner for Information in Ebonyi State and former Special Adviser on Media Relations, Abia Onyike has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onyike announced his decision during a gathering at Owutu Edda Ward in Edda Local Government Area on Wednesday, declaring his intent to support Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration.
Onyike, who previously served under former governors Sam Egwu and Martin Elechi, is also a past Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
In a public statement released to the press on Thursday, he explained his reasons for the switch, pointing to Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to restoring good governance in Ebonyi State.
“My decision to join the APC is because of the need to build a solid alliance of support for Governor Nwifuru, who has taken steps to restore good governance and inclusive politics in Ebonyi State,” Onyike stated.
He added that: “Politics is local, and we are driven by our own developmental aspirations in our state. I am joining other progressive forces to sustain and consolidate the peaceful atmosphere that has taken root under Governor Nwifuru’s leadership.”
The APC Chairman for Owutu Edda Ward, Mr. Oko Ogbuagu, welcomed Onyike into the party and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen the APC’s position in future elections.
“Onyike is a tested hand. He is a man of the people, and his entry into our party will enhance its fortunes,” Ogbuagu said.
