Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that his team’s aspirations for a historic fifth consecutive Premier League title could be shattered if they fail to beat Liverpool next Sunday.
Guardiola’s candid remarks came after Manchester City suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, marking their fifth loss across all competitions this season and their third consecutive league defeat.
The loss leaves City teetering on the edge of a significant gap in the title race. If Liverpool defeats Southampton on Sunday, they will go eight points clear at the top of the table. A Liverpool victory against City next week would stretch that gap to 11 points — a deficit Guardiola acknowledges could be insurmountable.
“Yeah, it’s true,” Guardiola told ESPN when asked about the daunting prospect of an 11-point gap. “We’re not thinking about winning or losing the title. We are not in the situation to think about what is going to happen at the end of the season. If in the end, we don’t win, it’s because we don’t deserve it. We won it in the past because we deserved it.”
Manchester City, plagued by inconsistent performances this season, now faces one of their biggest challenges under Guardiola’s leadership. With Liverpool in imperious form, the clash at the Etihad could be the defining moment of City’s season.
While Guardiola remains stoic about his team’s current plight, City fans are left grappling with the reality that their dominance in English football might be slipping.
The match against Liverpool is shaping up to be more than just a battle for three points – it could be the last stand for a once-invincible team.
