Tensions erupted at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday as former National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, was physically attacked and ejected from the ongoing Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting.
Ude-Okoye, who has been laying claim to the position of National Secretary despite opposition from a faction loyal to embattled National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, was confronted by a group of party members upon his arrival at Wadata Plaza.
Eyewitnesses reported a heated altercation that quickly escalated into physical aggression, with some supporters of Anyanwu allegedly manhandling Ude-Okoye and pushing him out of the venue. The commotion disrupted the meeting, leading to a temporary breakdown of order.
Amidst the chaos, Ude-Okoye was heard shouting and giving instructions to a group of men clad in black, whom he allegedly brought to the meeting. Their presence further heightened tensions, prompting security operatives, including personnel from the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Security Services (DSS), to intervene and restore calm.
The crisis within the PDP has deepened in recent months, with leadership disputes fueling internal divisions ahead of key political decisions. Tuesday’s violent clash underscores the party’s ongoing struggle for stability as different factions battle for control.
As of press time, neither the party leadership nor security agencies had issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, sources within the PDP indicate that the BoT meeting was eventually reconvened behind closed doors.
