Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel star Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging for her murder.
The verdict was delivered on Monday by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.
The court found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide, declaring that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Osinachi’s death on April 8, 2022, sparked national outrage after allegations of domestic abuse surfaced.
The federal government had arraigned Nwachukwu on a 23-count charge, including homicide, spousal battery, and child cruelty.
Throughout the trial, 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, testified against him.
The court admitted 25 documents as evidence, painting a chilling picture of prolonged abuse that led to Osinachi’s death.
Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency. But the prosecution insisted the full weight of the law must be applied.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme agreed, sentencing him to death on the lead count of culpable homicide.
The court also handed down various prison terms and fines for other charges against him.
Osinachi’s death, once shrouded in mystery, has now been legally confirmed as murder, a haunting end to a voice that once inspired millions.
