A Nigerian British boxer and former two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua has opened up about his knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois in their highly anticipated heavyweight clash on Saturday.
Recall that African Culture TV reported that the fight, which took place at Wembley Stadium in front of a crowd of 96,000, saw Dubois retain his IBF heavyweight title after knocking Joshua out in the fifth round.
Dubois, 27, dominated the fight, knocking Joshua down four times before delivering a powerful right hand in the fifth round that sealed his victory.
In a post-match press conference, Joshua reflected on his performance and attributed his defeat to a series of errors during the bout.
“The first round? Overhand right, chin in the air, no defense—kaboom. And it was a bit of a downhill slope from there,” Joshua said. “I tried to change the tides, but it just wasn’t my night tonight.”
Despite showing moments of promise, Joshua admitted that things went wrong in the decisive fifth round.
“I caught him with a good shot, I think, and then I tried to go for it. But I got caught with an overhand right when I was throwing the uppercut,” he explained.
Joshua acknowledged that his approach lacked precision and timing. “I wasn’t setting shots up. In a shootout like that, you really got to be a bit more sniper-esque. But when you’ve been hit a few times, it’s survival. I was in survival mode.”
