AFCON: Libya To Play Off Super Eagles, Says ‘No Room For Excuses’
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has said that it will not tolerate any excuses ahead of the second leg of their Group D 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier against the Super Eagles.
The statement comes after a chaotic travel situation saw the Nigerian team stranded at Al Abaq Airport for over 16 hours following an unexpected diversion, causing Nigeria to initially pull out of the match scheduled for today.
In a post shared on its X handle on Tuesday, the LFF emphasized its commitment to the match and readiness for the clash at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benghazi. Accompanying photos of the Libyan team’s training session, the LFF wrote, “Some may be used to putting up obstacles before the match, but here in the heart of Benghazi, specifically on the grounds of the Martyrs of Benina Stadium, there is no room for excuses after the starting whistle.”
The NFF’s withdrawal from the match had been met with sharp criticism from the LFF, which condemned Nigeria’s decision and accused them of failing to cooperate in organizing the fixture. The LFF hinted at pursuing legal action to safeguard the interests of the Libyan national team.
“The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match scheduled for Tuesday, October 15. It will take all legal measures to preserve the interests of the Libyan national football team,” the LFF said in a statement shared by *The Libya Observer*.
The LFF also referenced the challenging conditions faced by its own team during the first leg in Nigeria, suggesting that the obstacles encountered by the Super Eagles in Libya were minor in comparison.
“The Libyan Federation attaches some inhumane footage that did not prevent the Libyan mission from playing the Nigeria-Libya match last Friday in Nigeria, out of cooperation with the Confederation of African Football,” the statement added. “The Nigerian federation did not cooperate with us in any way, whether regarding the first or second leg match.”
