In a swift move to tackle human right violations, the Adamawa State Police Command has taken a bold step to fight for the right of Mrs Salamatu Yakubu, a 22-year-old woman, living at Angwan Tana area of Jimeta-Yola, Adamawa State after she was beaten by her uncle, Umar Shaibu, for allegedly refusing to receive traditional medications meant for trauma related treatment.
The viral video of Mrs Yakubu being kicked and molested by her uncle was seen making rounds on the internet, with netizens criticising the act as inhumane while calling for the authorities to intervene.
Speaking with African Culture TV over the phone on Tuesday, the spokesman of the command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed that the victim, who is a niece to Shaibu, is married woman with three children.
He stressed that after interrogations with the suspect, findings revealed that the victim (Mrs Yakubu) is an orphan who lost both parents at an early age and became traumatised. The trauma is said to have affected her, making her behave like someone mentally challenged or someone with spiritual sickness.
Nguroje said considering the state of mind of the woman, “The suspect went and got traditional medicines for her to be taking for treatment, and when he discovered she was not taking them, this provoked him into beating and molesting her.
“We’ve arrested him, as I’m talking to you now, the suspect is in our custody at the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for diligent investigation and prosecution.
“Immediately after investigation, we’re going to prosecute him under the administration of the criminal justice system, an arm of Adamawa State penal code law.”
The spokesman explained that the victim was taken to the hospital, where she’s given all the necessary treatments.
“After the treatment, she has been released back to the family where she’s being taken care of,” he added.
Meanwhile, in a press statement issued on Monday, the police spokesman highlighted how the culprit was arrested.
He said following the widespread circulation of the disturbing video depicting the physical abuse of the woman on 13th March, 2025, “concerned citizens, Good Samaritans, NGOs, and civil society organizations made several calls to the police.”
He explained that the timely response from the police eventually led to the arrest of the suspect.
