Malawi Government Provides K15 Million Consolation Package To Families Of 1959 Martyrs

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawi government has announced a consolation package of K15 million for each family of the 1959 martyrs.
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda confirmed that the disbursement process will be completed by Thursday.
He noted tha so far, 31 families have received the payment, while the remaining beneficiaries from the Southern and Central Regions will receive theirs this week. “All families from the Northern Region have already been paid,” he said.
The families of the martyrs have been seeking compensation since 2005, with many living in poverty despite their relatives’ heroic contributions to Malawi’s independence.
President Lazarus Chakwera acknowledged their suffering, stating that it was the colonial British government, not Malawi, that took the lives of the martyrs. Therefore, Malawi can only offer consolation, not full financial compensation.
In a significant move, President Chakwera has directed the Minister of Justice to initiate discussions with the UK government regarding possible compensation for the families of the martyrs. This directive demonstrates Malawi’s commitment to seeking historical justice for those who fought for independence.
The 1959 martyrs played a crucial role in Malawi’s struggle for independence. They were imprisoned, tortured, and killed by the colonial British government for their involvement in the fight for freedom. Their bravery and sacrifice paved the way for Malawi’s independence in 1964.
President Chakwera’s decision to provide consolation packages to the families of the martyrs is a step towards recognizing their contributions and sacrifices.
The government’s commitment to seeking compensation from the UK government is also a significant move towards addressing the historical injustices faced by the martyrs and their families.
The consolation packages are expected to bring relief to the families of the martyrs, many of whom have been struggling to make ends meet. The government’s efforts to recognize and compensate the martyrs’ families are a testament to its commitment to honoring Malawi’s history and heritage.
