KENYA: High Traffic Slows Portal For Users Checking 2024 National Examination Council Certificate Of Secondary Education
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has addressed concerns over delays in accessing the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results online.
In a statement, KNEC reassured the public that its system for checking results was fully functional despite being overwhelmed by up to 300,000 requests per second.
The council urged patience, emphasizing that everyone would eventually access their results.
Parents and students voiced frustrations on social media after the portal experienced significant delays following Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announcement of the results.
During the announcement, CS Ogamba explained that results could be accessed online via results.knec.ac.ke by entering the candidate’s index number and one of the registered names.
He also directed those facing challenges to contact KNEC’s toll-free numbers, 0800724900 or 0800721410.
Despite these measures, many schools and candidates struggled to retrieve their results.
The principal of Kereri Girls High School reported that accessing results took about ten minutes due to technical issues, though some grades, including A- and B, were successfully retrieved.
This is the second year the online portal has been used, replacing the SMS-based system to curb cases of fraudulent results. Similar challenges were reported during the 2023 results release.
A total of 962,512 candidates sat for the 2024 KCSE exams, compared to 899,453 in 2023.
However, the results of 840 candidates were canceled due to irregularities.
KNEC has assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the technical issues and ensure smooth access to the results.
