Malawian Police at Mitundu in Lilongwe, have apprehended Blessings Jubani, a 28-year-old man, for illegally possessing a live pangolin.
The arrest occurred on December 28, 2024, at Kambalanje Trading Centre.
According to Constable Khumbo Sanyiwa, Lilongwe Deputy Public Relations Officer, officers on patrol intercepted a motorcycle carrying two passengers.
One of the passengers suspiciously dropped a bag and fled, prompting the officers to search the bag.
Upon inspection the police found a hidden pangolin, the spokesman noted.
He highlighted that Jubani, the motorcycle rider, was immediately taken into custody.
However, the pangolin has been safely handed over to the Lilongwe Wildlife Center.
“Jubani will face charges in court for his involvement in the illegal possession of the pangolin,” the police said.
The arrest is a significant milestone in the fight against wildlife trafficking in Malawi.
Pangolins are highly valued on the black market for their scales and meat, leading to widespread poaching and trafficking.
The Malawian government has been working to strengthen laws and enforcement to protect these endangered animals.
The Lilongwe Wildlife Center, where the pangolin was taken, provides a safe haven for rescued wildlife.
The center works to rehabilitate and release animals back into the wild, while also educating the public about the importance of conservation.
The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to wildlife trafficking.
“By working together, law enforcement agencies, conservation organizations, and the community can help protect Malawi’s precious wildlife and natural resources,” the police said.
