Lagos Police Spokesperson Relieved As Cab Driver Apologise To Lawmaker
By Utebor Paul, Nigeria
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, has expressed relief after cab driver Stephen Abuwatsaye issued an apology to House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh without involving the police.
Abuwatsaye, who had alleged that Ikwechegh assaulted him in Abuja two weeks ago, surprised many Nigerians by releasing a video in which he apologised to the lawmaker, citing his desire for forgiveness.
In the video shared late yesterday, Stephen explained that he wanted to let go of the incident and seek forgiveness for himself, stating that it was his way of finding personal peace.
However, the video quickly led to mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians speculating that he may have been pressured into making the public apology.
Reacting to the development on his X handle, Hundeyin stated he was glad the apology was not recorded in a police station or as part of any formal police process.
“Nigerians would have dragged the police and attacked my person as well,” he commented, noting that such an environment could have led to increased scrutiny of the police.
