Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO) Urges Government to Protect Elderly Rights
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO) has called on the government to safeguard the rights of older persons in Malawi. This plea was made by Andrew Kavala, executive director of MANEPO, at an event commemorating International Elders’ Day, which was graced by Monica Chakwera, wife of President Lazarus Chakwera.
Kavala emphasized the need to protect older people from abuse, violence, and discrimination, citing the alarming rise in cases of elder abuse. In 2023, MANEPO documented over 113 cases of elder abuse, with 25 elderly individuals killed and 88 harassed due to accusations of witchcraft. Lynes Mumba, an older person presents at the event, shared her personal experience of being ostracized by younger community members who accused her of being a witch.
Monica Chakwera reiterated the importance of respecting and valuing older persons, acknowledging their contributions to society. She emphasized that older persons are a treasure trove of knowledge and experience, and their rights must be protected. The Malawi government has taken steps to address these concerns, including the passage of the Older Persons’ Bill in April 2024.
This legislation aims to promote the welfare and dignity of older persons in Malawi. During the event, Monica Chakwera also distributed gifts, including blankets, maize, and cash, to over 300 older people, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.
MANEPO’s advocacy efforts seek to ensure that older persons in Malawi are treated with dignity and respect, free from abuse and discrimination.
