Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Mikati made the appeal during a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot in Beirut on Monday.
According to a statement from his office, Mikati stressed that “the key to resolving the crisis is to stop Israel’s aggression against Lebanon.”
He further called for the revival of the ceasefire appeal, previously championed by both the United States and France.
Barrot, who arrived in Beirut on Sunday, is the first foreign diplomat to visit Lebanon since Israel intensified its strikes on Hezbollah-controlled areas.
The French minister’s visit coincided with a deadly Israeli strike that hit a building in the heart of Beirut.
Mikati also emphasized the need for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which brought an end to the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Israeli airstrikes have primarily targeted Hezbollah strongholds in the southern and eastern regions of Lebanon, as well as parts of southern Beirut.
