NIGERIA: No More Defection Ahead Of 2027 As INEC Confirms Submission Of Voters Register By All Political Parties
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties have submitted their membership registers in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
INEC made the announcement on Friday in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
The commission said all the parties met the requirement, submitting their registers by May 8, 2026, two days ahead of the extended deadline of May 10.
The extension was granted after political parties expressed concerns over the original timeline during a meeting with INEC. The commission had earlier shifted the deadline from April 21 to May 10, 2026, to align with the period for party primaries scheduled between April 23 and May 30.
INEC noted that the submission of membership registers is in line with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, which mandates parties to submit their registers at least 21 days before conducting primaries.
The commission stated that the submitted registers will now undergo necessary verification processes as required by law.
This development is expected to strengthen internal party discipline and significantly reduce last-minute defections by politicians as the country prepares for the 2027 gen
eral elections.
