President William Ruto announced a 12 per cent increase in general wages and a 15 per cent rise in agricultural wages as Kenya marked its 61st Labour Day.
Speaking during national celebrations held at Chavakali Boys High School, the President said the move recognises the contribution of workers to the country’s economic growth.
“I am pleased to announce a 12 per cent increase in general wages and a 15 per cent increase in agricultural wages,” he said.
Ruto also announced a reduction of the affordable housing deposit from 10 per cent to 5 per cent for salaried workers, alongside reforms to the Social Health Authority to improve access to healthcare.
“We have withdrawn restrictive tariff mechanisms that caused unintended challenges, including outpatient caps,” he added.
The President further revealed that teachers will now access over 9,000 health facilities, up from 900, including all Level 6 hospitals.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to workers’ rights, saying Kenya will soon ratify key International Labour Organization conventions on domestic workers and workplace safety.
