By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Lagos State Government has welcomed the Federal Government’s approval of Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project, describing it as a major step toward improving urban mobility and reducing pressure on the state’s transport network.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for approving the project, noting that it marks a significant milestone in Lagos’ infrastructure development.
The governor made this known in a statement shared on his verified X handle.
According to him, the Green Line rail will cover approximately 68 kilometres, connecting Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, with about 17 stations planned across key areas including Victoria Island, Ajah, and the Lekki corridor.
He noted that the rail line is expected to serve up to 500,000 passengers daily at inception, with capacity projected to increase to about one million over time.
“This project is a significant milestone for our state. The Green Line will span approximately 68 kilometres… linking Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu added that the system would be capable of moving up to 35,000 passengers per hour in each direction, significantly reducing travel time and easing congestion on major roads.
He described the initiative as part of broader efforts to enhance mobility, support economic growth, and improve the quality of life for residents.
“This project reflects our commitment to improving mobility, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for Lagosians,” he added.
The Green Line is one of several rail projects under development in Lagos aimed at addressing the city’s long-standing transportation challenges and supporting its
growing population.
