KENYA: CS Ruku Assures Kenyans of Adequate Relief Food Amid Ongoing Drought
By Moses Punyuah, Nairobi
Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has assured Kenyans that the government has adequate relief food stocks to support vulnerable households affected by the ongoing drought.
Speaking during a relief food distribution exercise at Morokani Village in Tana North Sub-County, Tana River County, the CS said the government is fully committed to ensuring that no life is lost to hunger, even as over 3.1 million Kenyans in 23 ASAL counties continue to face severe food shortages.
“The government has enough relief food, and we are committed to ensuring that no Kenyan dies of hunger during this drought period,” said Ruku.
To further cushion families and keep children in school, the CS announced that the government will roll out porridge flour distribution in public schools across the country, targeting learners in drought-hit regions.
“We are introducing porridge flour in schools to ensure our children stay in class and are not forced to drop out due to hunger,” he added.
At the same time, Ruku issued a stern warning to public officers involved in the distribution of relief food against diverting the supplies for personal gain.
“Any officer found diverting relief food meant for vulnerable families will face the full force of the law,” he warned.
During the exercise, the CS distributed 900 bags of rice and 700 bags of beans to residents of Morokani village, where over 10,000 people are currently affe
cted by drought.
