The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has wrapped up a key preparatory meeting with major transport unions in the Federal Capital Territory to lock in reliable logistics support for the upcoming Area Council elections set for Saturday.
Representatives from the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the National Association of Transport Owners attended the session where discussions centred on guaranteeing the safe and punctual delivery of election personnel sensitive materials and other essentials to polling locations across the six Area Councils.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan SAN emphasised that efficient transportation remains one of the cornerstones of credible elections.
He insisted that all polling units must receive materials by 7:00am at the latest to allow accreditation and voting to begin promptly at 8:30am.
He instructed that vehicle departures from Registration Area Centres should occur between 6:00am and 6:30am factoring in travel distances road conditions and other practical considerations.
The Chairman revealed that the Commission will mobilise more than 1100 vehicles to cover the 2822 polling units scattered throughout the FCT. He warned that only mechanically sound vehicles with responsible and adequately instructed drivers would be accepted adding that the Commission has introduced tighter oversight mechanisms to avoid any repeat of past logistical shortfalls.
He described the unions as indispensable partners whose role extends beyond driving to actively upholding the credibility of the entire electoral exercise.
Leaders of the unions responded positively promising stronger oversight of vehicle operations availability of standby vehicles and stricter adherence to timelines.
INEC reiterated its determination to deliver a transparent credible and well executed election and called on every stakeholder to contribute toward a calm and suc
cessful polling day.
