NIGERIA: Kogi State Government Defends Temporary School Closure As Preventive Measure Amid Security Concerns
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Kogi State Government has described its decision to temporarily shut down all primary and secondary schools across the state as a proactive and responsible step, driven by credible intelligence rather than panic.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, addressed journalists in Lokoja to clarify the rationale behind the closure, which took effect immediately and has been framed as an advanced mid-term break. Reports indicate schools are expected to remain closed until February 16, 2026, to allow for enhanced security arrangements.
Fanwo emphasized that the move was based on actionable intelligence highlighting potential threats to educational institutions. The government prioritized the safety of pupils, students, and teachers by implementing protective measures around schools, choosing to act preventively to avert any avoidable incidents.
“This decision was not borne out of panic, but of responsibility. The government chose to act proactively rather than wait for avoidable incidents,” Fanwo said.
He further noted that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has instructed all relevant agencies to swiftly deploy necessary security modalities, ensuring schools can resume academic activities as soon as conditions are deemed safe. This is aimed at minimizing disruption to the state’s academic calendar.
The commissioner praised security agencies for their timely and effective intelligence-sharing, which he said demonstrates the strength of Kogi’s security framework. He assured residents that authorities are working tirelessly to identify and neutralize criminal hideouts.
Fanwo reiterated the administration’s unwavering commitment to child safety, declaring “The safety of our children, teachers, and educational institutions remains non-negotiable. This administration will always prioritise lives while ensuring continuity in governance and education.”
The closure follows broader security challenges in parts of Nigeria, where schools have occasionally been targeted in attacks. Kogi officials have stressed that the measure is temporary and precautionary, with ongoing operations to restore normalcy.
Parents and educators have been urged to stay informed through official channels as updates on resumption are provided.
The government maintains it is fully in control of the situation and committed to safeguarding liv
es across the state.
