A former frontline supporter of Muhammadu Buhari is now urging ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to return to power in 2027.
Dr. Jibril Mustapha, President of the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation and former leader of the Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), made the call on Sunday in Lagos.
He described Jonathan as Nigeria’s best hope for unity and recovery in a time of deepening national crises.
“As the nation prepares for the 2027 elections, we believe it’s time for Nigerians to rally behind a candidate who can genuinely unite the country. We urge former President Goodluck Jonathan to consider this call and step forward,” Mustapha declared.
The endorsement is especially striking given Mustapha’s political history, leading a youth movement that once campaigned fiercely against Jonathan in favor of Buhari, who eventually unseated the Bayelsa-born leader in 2015.
Citing widespread insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and banditry, Mustapha argued that Nigeria is at a crossroads and needs a steady, inclusive hand at the helm.
“Jonathan’s tenure showcased integrity, respect for democratic values, and a governance style that prioritized all Nigerians,” he said.
The call comes amid renewed debates over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, following a 2022 Bayelsa Federal High Court ruling affirming his right to seek the presidency again, having not officially completed two elected terms.
According to Mustapha, Jonathan’s return could spark a national renaissance.
“We need a unifier, someone with experience and the ability to steer Nigeria away from the brink. Under Jonathan’s leadership, we can rebuild Nigeria’s battered reputation at home and abroad,” ” he added.
